Beautiful, small iron meteorite.Supplied in a collector's box.Locality: Sikhote-Alin Mts., RussiaSize: approx. 2 cmWeight: 7gSize of box: approx. 3.5 x 5.5 cmThis is a fragment of an iron meteorite which fell on 12 February 1947 over Eastern Siberia close to the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, in front of more than 240 eyewitnesses. In an air burst, thousands of fragments created over one hundred impact craters in the permafrost soil. The largest crater of 6 meters depth measures 26 meters in diameter, sound and light of the largest meteorite fall in recent times could be seen in 300km distance!In this meteorite event, fragments were severely warped and formed sharp edges, which is why they're referred to as "shrapnels".The Sikhote-Alin meteorite was made up of 93% iron and likely used to be an asteroid which got deflected from its original orbit. Before entering Earth's atmosphere, it's estimated to have weighed around 100 tons, 70 of which crashed onto Earth. A collective 30 tons have been found as scattered fragments of various sizes and weight.Note: Iron meteorites contain a certain amount of nickel.
