Period: Pliocene;Location: Samos, Greece;Size: 15.5 x 6 x 6 cmTragocerus is an extinct genus of horned ungulates (Bovidae) that lived in the eastern Mediterranean region during the late Miocene and early Pliocene epochs. Fossil finds have been reported from the island of Samos in Greece, among other places. The animals resembled modern antelopes in terms of physique and lifestyle. They typically had slender limbs, indicating rapid movement in open landscapes, and strong, backward-curving horns. Their teeth show an adaptation to hard plant food such as grasses, suggesting a lifestyle in savannahs or semi-open steppe landscapes.Tragocerus is one of many bovid species that were widespread in Europe during the Miocene/Pliocene epochs but no longer have any direct descendants today. The colours in the pictures may differ from those of the original.
