Snail: Cepaea silvestrina, Eocene, DE
Age: Neogene, Miocene;Locality: Nördlinger RiesSize: approx. 7 x 6,5 x 4,5 cmAround 15 million years ago, one of the world's most significant events in the history of the earth occurred here in Germany: the impact of a very large asteroid, which formed the impact crater. As a result, numerous rivers were diverted and new landscapes were formed. In the crater itself, torrential rainfall as a result of the event created a drainless lake, the so-called Ries Lake. There was no life in the warm and salty Ries Lake at this time. The salt came from the dissolved minerals, minerals from the Ries debris. Despite the reduction in salt content due to precipitation, the lake remained a salt (soda) lake for a long time. The snail Cepaea, which was found there, belongs to the land snail family and was washed into the lake during the event.washed into the lake. The colors of pictures can slightly differ from the original colors due to technical reasons.
