Remarkably beautiful, large, and tridimensionally preserved head ofBalteurypterus tetragonophtalmus on matrix.Eurypterids, also known as sea scorpions due to their pointed tails, originated in the Ordovician period. They were the dominant predators of the Upper Ordovician, Silurian, and Lower Devonian seas and reached their greatest species diversity during this time. This order's most impressive representatives could grow up to a length of 3 m, while Balteurypterus tetragonophtalmus only reached a few modest centimeters. The large group of eurypterids had a fin-like, powerful last pair of legs. They also had two respiratory systems, book gills and gill plates, and trace fossils show that they were quite capable of going ashore. Unfortunately, they didn't quite make the leap, for like their close relatives, the horseshoe crabs, they used their leg attachments for chewing, which is much more efficient underwater than on land.Fish were increasingly competing with them in the marine environment, causing the Eurypterids to retreat to river systems.Only a few varieties of what is believed to be the largest known arthropod of all time remained in the Permian period.Age: Silurian, Bagovitsa FormationLocality: Smotrych (left branch of Dniester River), near Kamianets-Podilskyi,Khmelnytskyi Oblast, UkraineHead size: 2.7 cmMatrix: approx. 3.5 x 3.5 cmDue to technical reasons, colors in product photos may differ from those of the original piece.

Life in the Stone Age - only available in German! This large-format and richly illustrated volume takes us on a fascinating journey of discovery into the world of mammoths and early humans. Humans emerged more than three million years ago. How exactly did our ancestors live? What animals did they hunt? Or how did they make fire? Which works of art and mysteries have they passed on to us?The detailed illustrations and atmospheric scenes in this book take us back to the time of Homo habilis and Neanderthals and bring the animals and people of the Stone Age back to life. We meet mysterious prehistoric animals such as the woolly rhinoceros and the cave bear and learn when our modern-day pets such as dogs and cats were domesticated and when humans themselves became sedentary. A beautiful, small iron-nickel meteorite. The majority of meteorites originate from asteroid belts located between Mars and Jupiter. On average, the distance to these belts ranges around 190 million kilometers. Their weight is immense: a solid sphere of this material with a diameter of just under 3 meters would weigh around 100 tons!It is estimated that this largely unaltered material is approximately 4.5 billion years old. None of the rocks on Earth are of comparable age.Following tips from indigenous people, Spanish colonialists discovered scattered fragments of an iron meteorite on a vast plain in Argentina in 1576. The meteorite was named after its discovery site, which the Spanish conquerors called “Campo del Cielo”—“Field of Heaven.” However, since their campaigns were primarily focused on looting gold or silver, the site was initially forgotten.Much later, researchers discovered that this iron was of meteoritic origin, and we now know that a large iron meteorite struck this area approximately 5,000 years ago.Locality: ArgentinaSize: approx. 1 cmPlease note: Iron meteorites contain a certain amount of nickel. People with nickel allergies should avoid direct skin contact or wear rubber gloves when handling them.Colors in product photos may differ from those of the original specimen for technical reasons. Our pictures are for reference only, you will receive a specimen of equivalent quality with your purchase.

Beautiful, small iron meteorite.Supplied in a collector's box.Locality: Sikhote-Alin Mts., RussiaSize: approx. 2 cmWeight: 7gSize of box: approx. 3.5 x 5.5 cmThis is a fragment of an iron meteorite which fell on 12 February 1947 over Eastern Siberia close to the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, in front of more than 240 eyewitnesses. In an air burst, thousands of fragments created over one hundred impact craters in the permafrost soil. The largest crater of 6 meters depth measures 26 meters in diameter, sound and light of the largest meteorite fall in recent times could be seen in 300km distance! In this meteorite event, fragments were severely warped and formed sharp edges, which is why they're referred to as "shrapnels".The Sikhote-Alin meteorite was made up of 93% iron and likely used to be an asteroid which got deflected from its original orbit. Before entering Earth's atmosphere, it's estimated to have weighed around 100 tons, 70 of which crashed onto Earth. A collective 30 tons have been found as scattered fragments of various sizes and weight.Note: Iron meteorites contain a certain amount of nickel. People with nickel allergies should avoid direct skin contact or wear rubber gloves when handling them.Colors in product photos may differ from those of the original specimen for technical reasons. Our pictures are for reference only, you will receive a specimen of equivalent quality with your purchase.
