This beautifully preserved brachiopod is a typical index fossil of the lower Zechstein. Horridonia horrida (SOWERBY, 1822)The characteristically strong curvature of the dorsal or pedicle flap can be easily recognized in this specimen. It also bore the spines that gave it its name; the spines can still be seen here. As filter feeders they lay in the sediment, the spines served to anchor them and prevent them from sinking in.The original label is enclosed.Age: Permian, Zechstein;Locality: Pößneck, Thuringia, GermanySize fossil: Ø 2.5 cm; matrix: 7.5 x 5.5 x 2 cmColors on product photos may differ slightly from those of the original specimen due to technical reasons.
