Beautiful, small iron-nickel meteorite.Comes in a collector's box. Most meteorites originate from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The average distance from there is approx. 190 million kilometers. The weight of this material is immense: even a massive 100-ton sphere of this material would only have a diameter of approx. 2.9 meters! It has been estimated that this nearly unaltered matter is around 4.5 billion years old. There is no rock of comparable age on Earth.According to information provided by natives, the Spanish conquistadors discovered scattered fragments of an iron meteorite on a vast plain in Argentina in 1576. As they were more interested in gold or silver, the site was initially forgotten. It was only much later that researchers discovered that this iron had a meteoritic origin. The meteorite was named “Campo del Cielo” (“Field of the Sky”) after its locality. It is now known that the impact of a large iron meteorite occurred here around 5,000 years ago.Locality: ArgentinaSize: approx. 1 cmPlease note: Iron meteorites contain a certain amount of nickel.
