Aus dem sächsischen Bergbau des Mittelalters stammt der Begriff Quaterz oder Qvertz – eine derbe Bergart, ein „böses Erz“, das kein Metall enthielt. Erst ab Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde der Begriff zunehmend zur Bezeichnung gut kristallisierter und schön gefärbter Varietäten verwendet – die chemisch meist nichts anderes als eine „gemeine Kiesel-säure“ sind.Quarz diente seit Beginn der Menschheit als Werkzeug.
