Trace fossils

Chondrites bollensis, Jurassic, GER
Chondrites bollensis, Jurassic, GER
These finely branched, dendritic ducts were left behind in the sea floor by sediment-eating organisms such as bristle worms. In the 19th century, the bushy structures were misinterpreted as plant remains (e.g. seaweed), which led to the term ‘seaweed shale’. It was only later that it was recognised that these were fossilised traces of life (ichnofossils).Age: Jurassic, Upper lias;Locality: Kirchheim, Baden-Württemberg, GermanySize: approx. 8,2 x 10 x 1 cmThe colors of pictures can slightly differ from the original colors due to technical reasons.
