This collection includes snails and bivalves from a basalt quarry which is a natural monument today. It is now forbidden to pick fossils there.The pieces are originally from a 1970 collection - so this really is a unique opportunity!In the Miocene, large parts of southern Styria were covered by a tropical shallow sea. A volcanic eruption, which covered the sea floor with a thick layer of basalt, preserved snails, shells and other material. During work in the quarry, the clay marl layer beneath the basalt was excavated, where among other fossils, preserved snails and mussels were discovered. A total of around 100 different species were found.Almost all the specimens have been precisely identified.
