As with all other plesiosaurs, the body of Plesiosaurus was adapted to life in the sea; like many other marine reptiles and mammals, the genus had limbs modified into flippers, with the front flippers of Plesiosaurus being slightly longer than the rear ones. Typical of most plesiosauroids, the neck of Plesiosaurus was also greatly elongated and consisted of 40 cervical vertebrae. At its end sat a relatively small skull with a set of pointed teeth.
