Product information "Munsell Rock Color Chart"
Originally developed by the GSA (Geological Society of America) and published for
mineralogists and geologists for outdoor use, this color chart was revised in 2009 at the
Munsell Laboratories and reintroduced to the market as a water-resistant chart.
The new Munsell Rock Color Chart with 115 color fields is perfect for describing rocks
while working in the terrain. These can be medium to fine-grained, but also coarse rocks.
For very coarse rock, determining the color of each mineral individually is often required.
The Munsell Rock Color Chart was developed to cover the range of minerals most commonly
found in rocks, such as feldspar, quartz, mica, and hornblende.
Unless it is too coarse, turning the sample or looking at it from a short distance determine
composited colors of individual minerals. Comparing those with the color chart, the color
designation can be documented.
- This chart contains the 115 Munsell notations necessary for determining rock colors
from the color tones: 5R, 10R, 5YR, 10YR, 5Y, 10Y, 5GY, 10GY, 5G, 10G, 5BG, 5B, 5PB,
5P, 5RP, 5YR, 5Y, 5GY, 5G, 5B + nine neutral gray tones.
Colors in product photos may differ from those of the original product for technical reasons.
