Tyrannosaurus rex grew up to 12 m long and weighed up to 9 t. At the end of the Cretaceous period, it stood at the top of the food chain in its habitat for over two million years and was one of the largest land predators on Earth. Fossils of many large herbivores from this period (e.g. Triceratops) show healed bite marks that clearly originated from T. rex. It is likely that the predatory dinosaur was not a pursuer but rather a stalker, like modern-day tigers or leopards. Stalkers sneak up on their prey
and overpower it as quickly as possible. Although Tyrannosaurus was extremely agile, it was not particularly fast. This is supported by the fact that, despite its long, muscular hind legs, it had to move an enormous body mass.
