Oncoid / Stromatolite, Cambrian, Algeria
Very nice exemplary piece.Age: CambrianLocality: Hamada du Guir, AlgeriaSize: 9 x 8 x 7 cmOncoids (stromatolites) preferably form in turbulent, shallow tropical seas. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) or red algae enclose a core, such as a shell fragment or a small stone with fine algal mats, deposit calcium carbonate, creating layers upon layers. Oncoids are roundish, tuberous and unconsolidated stromatolites (Logan et al. 1964), the formation of which is attributed to the involvement of cyanobacteria. The photo may differ slightly in color from the original due to technical reasons.
