Temperoceras was an orthocone nautiloid, a sort of squid-like mollusc with a striaght shell. They were dominant predators in the Devonian and Silurian. Their greatest advantage was being able to swim effortlessly by manipulating their density through the siphuncle, the small tube going through each chamber of its shell. They could use it to increase the gas volume in the chambers. These specimens have been polished to show the calcified interior of the shell.
