The petrified pieces of wood found in Palatinate, Germany are driftwood that has been deposited in Sandstone and gradually silicified. The red color comes from iron oxide traces that are characteristic of the German lower and mid-Permian, also known as Red Layers ("Rotliegend"). The most common genus is Dadoxylon.
This specimen was found in the last millenium during Autobahn construction, which makes the original locality inaccessible.
The pictures can differ in color from the originals for technical reasons.
