Araucaria are conifers that carry pointy, blade-like, hard leaves. They are nowdays only found in South America and Oceania, which is a relic from the time they were spread over the entire ancients southern continent of Gondwana (the remnants of which are now, South America, Africa, India, Antarctica and Australia).

The wood petrified by way of silica permineralisation, also know as silicification. When the wood is deposited in an anoxic environment, it usually coalifies. But if at the same time it is inundated with mineral waters (very often volcanically sourced, the precipitated silica fills out the the cavities in the wood and then tparts that get slowly decomposed by anaerobic bacteria.
