Belemnite (approx. 6 cm)
Well preserved and isolated belemnite. The name comes from the Greek "belemnon" - "projectile", which is why these fossils that are often found after storms are also called thunderbolts. This is a calcitic crystal that grows in the mantle of an ancient squid. Its stability allowed it to utilize great speed for a well controlled escape, unlike its cousins the ammonites who just hid in their shells. A similar, but much lighter structure can be seen in the modern cuttlefish.Period: Cretaceous, CampanianAge: about 80 million yearsPlace of discovery: Höver near Hannover, GermanySize: about 6 cmThe photo serves as an example. You will receive a specimen of comparable quality.

Age: Cretaceous, Campanian; approx. 80 million years oldLocality: Höver near Hannover, Lower Saxony, GermanySize: ca. 9 cmThe name stems from the Greek "belemnon" - "projectile". This is why these fossils which are often found after heavy storms are also called thunderbolts.Belemnites are calcite crystals that grew inside ancient squids, giving them stability. Unlike ammonites, which protected themselves with shells, these cephalopods were able to swim faster and agilely thanks to their sturdiness.
