Belemnite (~ 9 cm), GER
Well preserved and isolated belemnite.
Age: Cretaceous, Campanian; approx. 80 million years old
Locality: Höver near Hannover, Lower Saxony, Germany
Size: ca. 9 cm
The name stems from the Greek "belemnon" - "projectile". This is why these fossils which are often found after heavy storms are also called thunderbolts.
Belemnites are calcite crystals that grew inside ancient squids, giving them stability. Unlike ammonites, which protected themselves with shells, these cephalopods were able to swim faster and agilely thanks to their sturdiness. Something similar can be observed in the school of modern sepias.
The photo serves as an example. You will receive a specimen of comparable quality.
