During the extinction events of the Devonian the population size and diversity of trilobites took a massive hit, and thus became much rarer. Only the proetids, to which Paladin belongs, survived, and they only lasted until the end-Permian. They fed on detritus on the sea bed. The name comes from the large head shields of this group.
