Operculum, heart-shaped, 3 cm
from the Indo-Pacific.Size: approx. 3 cmThis is a lid of the gyro snail. This lid fits perfectly on the opening of the snail's shell, protecting its only weak point. Most snails have an operculum made of horn layers, but some groups such as turban snails and gyro snails additionally reinforce this layer with aragonite (calcium carbonate), which provides particularly good protection. Unlike the shell, it is formed by outer skin cells. It grows in the same circular shape in order to keep up with the ever-widening shell opening. The operculum is usually attached to the outside of the snail and directly to the muscle that pulls the snail into the shell. This allows the animal to block the opening with maximum force to protect itself from predators and dehydration, as it lives in shallow water. The photo is a sample image. You will receive a specimen of comparable quality.
