Place your specimens in the detergent "Rewoquat" - during subsequent soaking, the soft matrix such as marl will detach from the fossil. Well applicable for foraminifera, brachiopods and many more.
Can also be used to clean Solnhofen slab lime without attacking the fossil itself: simply brush over it and then wash off with hot water.
