Radiolites was a rudist, a kind of heterodont bivalve. The ability of its lover shell to grow fast and asymmetrical upwards granted the creature access to a higher, less debris-contaminated flow of water, where it could filter more effectively. As it only needed a hard surfaces to grown on and the shell itself was hard, a single Radiolites could become found on an entire colony, sometimes to its own detriment as it would become overgrown.
