This cast depicts a prehistoric horse found in the famous Messel Pit in Hesse:
Eurohippus messelensis (formerly Propalaeotherium messelense).
This fox-sized animal, with very recognizable four-toed front legs and three-toed
hind legs, is considered the ancestor of today’s horses and represents the root
of their evolution.
Age: Middle Eocene;
Found in: Messel Pit near Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany
Size of skeleton: 51.5 x 37.5 cm
