From the famous Messel Pit in Hesse comes this cast of a prehistoric horse: Eurohippus messelensis (formerly: Propalaeotherium messelense).
The fox-sized animal with its clearly recognizable four-toed forelegs and three-toed hind legs is considered the ancestor of today's horses. It represents the root of their evolution.
