With over 5,000 species, the ammonites formed the largest group of cephalopods. Its shell was usually rolled spirally and looked like a ram's horn. They appeared in the sea about 390 million years ago and extincted at the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago, much like the dinosaurs. Their size grew from a few centimetres to impressive three meters in diameter.
