Product information "Nummulites in Matrix"

Even though it was a monocellular protozoan, a nummulite was capable of leaving behind comparatively huge body fossils. It achieved this by building a calcareous exoskeleton and adding additional chambers throughout its life, growing to sizes of up to 10 cm. The animal itself sat in the newest chamber and extended its plasmatic pseudopods to feed on other microorganisms.

Age: Middle Eocene, Lutetian,
Locality: Magyarpolany, Bakony Mountains, Hungary, Europe.
Size: Nummulites: up to 3 cm (1.2 in); Specimen: 6 x 7 x 2,5 cm

Color on pictures can differ slightly from originals for technical reasons.
