Leaf from Willershausen, GER
Historical piece from Willershausen (nature reserve since 2007).
You can see two leaves. one on the front and one on the back.
Age: Pliocene (approx. 3 mio years old)
Locality: Willershausen, Harz Mountains, Germany
Size of fossils: 6.5 x 4.5 cm and 3.5 x 1.3 cm slab: 10 x 9 cm
These are extremely well-preserved leaves from the clay pit of Willershausen in the Harz mountains, where a pliocene lake comprises thousands of years of fine lacustrine muds that have been secondarily dolomitized by saline groundwater. Like glacical deposits, the sedimentation can be used to monitor seasonal changes. Cell structures and even plastids can be observed because of the depositional conditions and the young age of these fossils.
The colors on the pictures may differ slightly from the original due to technical reasons.
