Herring fish: Knightia eocaena
Age: Tertiary, Middle Eocene, Green River Shales;

Locality: Warfield Springs, Wyoming, USA
Size of the fish: approx. 6 cm; slab approx. 11-12 cm long
The slab limestones of the Eocene Green River Formation are in no way inferior to the famous Solnhofen slab limestones in terms of preservation quality and are much more abundant in some cases. Knightia is the most common fossil in the deposit and is synonymous with it. Knightia was a species of freshwater swarm fish which is always found in large numbers in fossil form. For this reason, it is assumed that they often fell victim to events such as algal blooms.
