Sponge: Raphidonema faringdonensis (approx. 3 cm)
Nice sponge, well preserved.Raphidoname are calcareous sponges that existed during the cretaceous from England to India. Their shallow bowl-shaped forms encrusted hard surfaces quickly, where they could use cilited cells to divert water currents through their pores to feed. Besides their typical calcite spicule skeleton they also had a superstructure of solid calcite as secondary scaffolding.Age: CretaceousRegion of discovery: Faringdon, Great BritainSize: ca. 3 cmThe picture is a sample.
