The West African sand dollar still exists today and has been adapted to life in shallow water at the base of waves for several million years. The flat shape reduces resistance and prevents them from being washed away. The "fingers" and spines, which are used for movement and no longer for protection, prevent dynamic buoyancy from taking effect. This way, the sea urchin can pick up food undisturbed with its small grasping feet, which is transported to the mouth by means of mucus trails.
