fossil horse bone
Period: Pleistocene,
Place of discovery: North Sea
Size: approx. 20-25 cm
Ancient horses used to be spread all over the Holarctic, until Pleistocene climate changes forced them to seek refuge in the central Asian steppe. Originally forest dweller, they adapted to the ecological change from forest to grasslands by becoming grazers. High-crowned, ever-growing teeth allowed them to cope with the abrasive nature of grasses while longe legs gave them a higher vantage point and the speed to escape from any predator. The bones we offer are not even leg bones like we have them, but a single metatarsal (the bones in our feet) also called cannon bone.
