Ursus spelaeus, bone, Quaternary, CZE
Metacarpal or metatarsal bone of a cave bear Ursus spelaeus from the Quaternary of the Czech Republic.
Like their modern relatives, the prehistoric bears also hibernated in caves, with some animals regularly not reawakening. This is why their bones can be found in large quantities in these ancient caves, which gave them their name.
Although they were largely herbivores, their claws and teeth as well as their muscular build provided effective self-protection, which the bears also used against attackers.
