In the Miocene, large parts of southern Styria were covered by a tropical shallow sea. A volcanic eruption, which covered the sea floor with a thick layer of basalt, preserved snails, shells and other material. During work in the quarry, the clay marl layer beneath the basalt was excavated, where fossil snails, mussels and other fossils were discovered.
Around 100 different species were identified.
