Beautiful, silicified coral belonging to the Thecosmilia trichotoma species.
Hard corals (Scleractinia) like this one appeared in the Triassic, but it was their symbiosis with algae towards the Jurassic that turned the corals into reef builders again. In contrast to older corals such as tabulates and rugose, their skeletons were made of aragonite, not calcite.
Age: Upper Jurassic, Lower Tithonian
Locality: Nattheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
