Product information "Sponge: Raphidonema faringdonensis (approx. 3 cm)"
Nice sponge, well preserved.
Raphidoname are calcareous sponges that existed during the cretaceous from England to India. Their shallow bowl-shaped forms encrusted hard surfaces quickly, where they could use cilited cells to divert water currents through their pores to feed. Besides their typical calcite spicule skeleton they also had a superstructure of solid calcite as secondary scaffolding.
