Polished slab with plant fossils.The locally occurring Rhynie Chert is a freshwater sediment formed where rivers and ponds came into contact with hydrothermal vents, causing their deposits to silicify. This resulted in a highly detailed preservation of plants and possibly arthropods. This makes Rhynie a very important site for invertebrate palaeontology as well as early vascular plants such as Rhynia, Aglaophyton, Horneophyton and Asteroxylon.
