A cast of a prehistoric horse from the famous Messel Pit in Hesse.
With clearly recognizable four-toed forelegs and three-toed hind legs, this fox-sized animal is considered the ancestor of today's horses. It is the root of their evolution.
Age: Middle Eocene; approx. 48 million years old
Locality: Messel Pit near Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany
