Size: approx. 2.5–2 cm


Hildoceras is a key fossil from the Jurassic period. They are easily recognizable by the lateral groove and the curved ribs above it.
The genus name Hildoceras was given in honor of Saint Hilda of Whitby (614-680 AD).
Fossils of Hildoceras semipolitum have been found in North Africa, the Caucasus Mountains, Europe, and eastern England.

Hildoceras is also one of the index fossils of the Posidonia Shale  Jurassic Sediments.

The shell is averagely evolute, with a spiral that grows more rapidly in the internal whirls. It is adorned by sturdy, clavate, simple ribs.
