Product information "Ediacaran biota: Karakhtia nessovi, Precambrian, RUS"
A true rarity!
Karakhtia nessovi is a species of Proarticulate in the family Vendiidae that reaches a length
of up to 100 mm (0.39 inches) and, like other representatives of this family, features a
head-shield-like structure.
Unlike all other Proarticulates, it has a rim with radial folds, giving it a ruffled appearance.
It first appeared during the Ediacaran Period about 555 million years ago. K. nessovi is the
only species in the genus Karakhtia.
Haootia has been loosely compared to Karakhtia since haootia fossils superficially resemble
the crinkled margins of Karakhtia.
Karakhtia's holotype was found in the Ustʹ Pinega Formation near the White Sea
in northwestern Russia and described in 2004.
The genus name Karakhtia refers to the Karakhta River in the Arkhangelsk Oblast,
near which the fossil material was found. The species name nessovi derives from
Leningrad paleontologist L. A. Nessov.

Kimberella Beds
