Diptera, Cretaceous, Yixian; CHN
Exceptionally well-preserved diptera, rich in detail so that the insect is clearly recognizable.
A world-famous fossil deposit from the Cretaceous period, known as the Yixian formation, is located in the Chinese province of Liaoning. This site is characterized by exceptionally well-preserved remains of various organisms such as birds, small dinosaurs, reptiles, fish and plant remains, as well as insects.
Particularly noteworthy is the excellent preservation of prehistoric insects, making this formation a mecca for paleontologists.
What is more, the exceptional state of preservation of the fossils can be traced back to a catastrophic event: A massive volcanic eruption covered vast areas of land with ash. Volcanic ash preserved the fauna and flora of the time in remarkable detail, creating a unique window into Cretaceous life.
