The extinct bivalve species Ceromya aalensis lived during the Middle Jurassic, more precisely in the Aalenian stage around 174 to 170 million years ago. Its name is derived directly from this time interval. It inhabited shallow marine environments that once covered large parts of Europe, and its fossils have been found especially in regions that are now part of Germany, such as the Swabian Jura. Like many bivalves, Ceromya aalensis was a filter feeder that lived on or within the seafloor, obtaining its food from particles suspended in the water. Its shell was typically oval to elongated in shape, relatively thick, and often shows fine growth lines that provide insights into its development.
