Belonostomus sp., Jurassic; GER

Product information "Belonostomus sp., Jurassic; GER"

A well-preserved and fairly large specimen of a ray-finned fish of the species
Belonostomus sp. from the famous Solnhofen fossil beds!

A characteristic fossil of Belonostomus, a fascinating and elongated predatory fish that
once prowled the Jurassic marine environment. Similar to modern pike, this genus was
characterized by a slender body and a strikingly elongated, pointed snout, which
probably allowed Belonostomus to prey on smaller fish and other marine animals.

The elegant body shape makes this specimen a particularly attractive representative
of fossil fish from the Solnhofen limestone slabs.
A beautiful collector’s item and an interesting glimpse into the marine world
of the Upper Jurassic!

During the Upper Jurassic, the Solnhofen Sea stretched across southern Germany.
Numerous reef structures divided a warm, tropical shallow ocean, in which basin-like
lagoons situated between the reefs became highly saline and oxygen-poor and cyclically
evaporated. As a result, all life within them perished and was completely buried.
This, of course, also included plants that had been washed in and their decomposers.
Fossils are often exceptionally well-preserved in this kind of limestone.

Age: Upper Jurassic, Lower Tithonian, Malm Zeta;
Locality: Solnhofen/Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany
Fish: approx. 40 cm Matrix: approx. 47 x 25 x 1 cm

Gyrodus hexagonus, Jurassic, GER

A beautifully preserved “moonfish” - Gyrodus hexagonus originating from Solnhofen, a renowned German fossil site!Located in the center of the slab, this Gyrodus specimen is in excellent condition and features many intricately preserved details. This was a marine fish belonging to the order of Pycnodontiformes, that likely used its powerful teeth to crush hard-shelled prey such as clams and other invertebrates (some of which are also preserved)—a fascinating inhabitant of the Jurassic seas some 150 million years ago.Well-preserved and appealing specimens from Solnhofen are particularly sought after. This one is truly a showstopper for any fossil collection. Upon request, we’d be happy to send you additional close-up photos as well as photos taken under UV light, which may reveal further details of its preservation. The Solnhofen Sea consisted of a series of lagoons in southern Germany, which evaporated cyclically, becoming highly saline and oxygen-deprived. Eryon cuvieri, Jurassic, incl. counterpart, GER

In the center of the slab, you can see an impressive specimen of the rare species Eryon cuvieri. This extraordinary piece stands out for its intricate preservation and beautiful depiction of the crustacean. In addition to the slab, you will also receive the counterpart slab, making this specimen particularly interesting for serious collectors.Upon request, we’d be happy to send you additional photos as well as UV light images that reveal further details. An attractive piece for any fossil collection!Eryon is an extinct genus of the Reptantia family from the German Late Jurassic period. Its remains are a classic in Solnhofen limestone (Plattenkalk). The crustacean could reach a length of about 10 cm (3.9 inches) and probably fed on particles on the seafloor. It became extinct some time after the Late Jurassic, which ended about 145 million years ago. The records do not specify a precise date for the extinction of the genus itself; they merely indicate that its existence is limited to fossil finds from the Late Jurassic.Age: Upper Jurassic, Lower Tithonian, Malm Zeta;Locality: Solnhofen/Eichstätt, Bavaria, GermanyEryon: approx. 13 cm; matrix: approx. 40 x 20 x 1 cmColors in product photos may differ from those of the original specimen for technical reasons.
